#7: School and Mediocrity

Updated: Nov 1, 2020

Among the numerous problems with school is the mediocrity associated with it. School does not just happen upon mediocrity either. It is instilled in the students by design. Many of them will take the same courses. All of them will follow the same basic path. Middle school. High school. College. Job. This route is followed by the average person.

In fact, this route is followed by so many people, that if you follow it you are, by definition, being average. Average is mediocre. There are good things and bad things about this. Most people don’t want to be anything more than average. The way school exists right now, it prevents these people from being anything less. That way, they can at least function in society and not be a burden.

The problem is, there is a percentage of people who want to be more than average. A minority who really wants to be wildly successful. For them, there is no clear alternative. While school supposedly sets people up to succeed, by this group’s standards, it has set them up to fail.
